"How Carefully Crafted Underwater Imagery Inspires Conservation Action"
On December 13th, 2024, the Saigon Divers Club marked a milestone in ocean stewardship by hosting an inspiring speaker session to celebrate the opening of Bubbles & Lenses's underwater photography exhibition: "Friends? Who Are They? - Part 2". Held at SOMA, in the vibrant district of Thao Dien, in Ho Chi Minh City, the event brought together six prominent voices in the realms of sustainable living, marine science, filmmaking, diving instruction, and underwater photography equipment. Their discussion revolved around a shared belief: the power of beautiful images to drive meaningful conservation action.
A Picture’s Power to Influence
The session kicked off with a discussion on how captivating visuals — whether photographs, videos, or other media — are more than art; they are catalysts for change. Quyên, founder of a sustainable living solutions retailer, highlighted how consumers often overestimate their understanding of how daily actions impact marine ecosystems. "Buyers are drawn to stunning images, which trigger curiosity and action," they explained, "but it’s through repeated exposure to such visuals that deeper awareness, curiosity and education take root." Images serve as both a window into an unknown world and a mirror, reflecting the viewer's connection to the environment.
Photography at the service of science
Hoàng, a marine scientist, emphasized the historical value of underwater imagery. Stunning as they are, these images can also function as baseline data for tracking changes over time — such as monitoring coral reef health periodically, documenting endangered species in specific locations, tracking ecosystem biodiversity — which may instruct conservation policies and measure their impact. From professional DSLR setups to simple action cameras, any image capture device can contribute valuable scientific data. "Images are time capsules of the underwater world," the scientist noted, "and in some cases, they’ve led to the discovery of previously undescribed species."
Creativity Meets Accessibility
For those inspired to take the plunge into underwater photography, the event explored the practical side of creating images. One after another, Matsuoto-san, representative of the OM System brand, a leading camera manufacturer followed by Duy, a camera retailer specializing in underwater photography gear demystified the process, showcasing tools for every budget and skill level. Options ranged from compact waterproof cameras for beginners to sophisticated macro systems for advanced photographers. "The key is finding the right tool for your creative vision," they explained, adding that building confidence in both diving and photography skills is essential.
Learning Responsibly, Diving Safely
Chris, a PADI diving course director weighed in on the importance of mindful diving practices for aspiring underwater photographers. “The camera should never compromise safety,” he cautioned, recommending beginner divers focus on mastering basic skills before adding a camera to their dives. The exhibiting photographers — whose work features in "Friends? Who Are They?" — are living proof that remarkable results are achievable with practice and guidance from experienced mentors. Whether aspiring to document marine ecosystems for scientific research or simply capturing the joy of diving, participants were reminded that the ultimate goal is to return safely from every dive.
The Ocean’s Voice Needs Amplifiers
Perhaps the most poignant takeaway came from Cecilia, a Singaporean filmmaker based in HCMC, who issued a call to action: "As underwater image-makers, we document a world few get to experience. That world is under threat from climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Our mission is to be the ocean’s voice." Her sentiment resonated deeply, echoing the ethos of the exhibition which explores our relationship to and the interconnectedness among marine life.
Explore The Ocean Through Bubbles & Lenses
The Bubbles & Lenses' exhibit features three connected series: "Play!" highlights the whimsical behaviours of marine animals, "All Eyes on You" focuses on the captivating gaze of reef inhabitants, and "Tiny Scales of the Sea" reveals the intricate details of microscopic creatures. Together, these works invite viewers to explore the ocean’s beauty and fragility and to become advocates for its protection. From now until Tết (Lunar New Year 2025), SOMA will showcase this journey into the underwater realm.
As the event closed, a shared hope emerged: that each image, whether in the exhibit or captured anew, might inspire someone to act, to learn, and to cherish the ocean.
